Extending Add to Menu to Frontend 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi Peter, i think Add to Menu is a great extension for Backend admins/Authors, but just for ease of use i would like to have it available in the Frontend as well. I saw a thread here where someone wanted the same, to which you replied that you're not so sure that granting control over the menu in the frontend is desirable security wise. I see that point, but when you (like myself and others i know) do a lot of editing in the Frontend because you have a direct (WYSIWYG) overview over your articles without browsing a list and having to open everything, having to go back to the backend for every menulink is somewhat annoying. A solution to this would be to make Add to Menu available as a JCE plugin. Administrators can then edit permissions as to who gets that option in JCE and who don't. I really don't know how complicated this would be, but hope you will consider the idea. To top it off, being able to remove menulinks would be ultimately great

Anyway, thanks for this greatly needed extension, i don't get why it isn't available in 1.5 anymore when it was such a useful feature in 1.0. Hope it returns in 1.6, does anyone know if that's planned?

TIA,

Myler

It is on the todo list to extend Add to Menu with an option editor button... but will not be done any time soon. But me that is. If anyone feels like programming it, they are welcome to do it off course.

I could give it a try maybe, you have some pointers where to start? I assume this requires senior programming skills?

Hello Peter and Myler

the fact that clients cannot add new articles senseful since they cannot assign them to a menu is really such a big minus for joomla. and it would be so simple, just to add a drop box where the menu can be chosen, like in drupal and wordpress it comes naturally. So Add to Menu from frontend would be simply perfect, it is most needed and i wonder if one of you meanwhile since one year passed did this or have another tip how i can offer my client to add his articles so they also appear in his menu. Otherwise it is simply useless

Thanks for good work and support. I mentioned you in the thanks to section of our site (including a link), i hope you agree

With all the Joomla 1.6 work to still be done, there hasn't been any progress on this from my side.
If Add to Menu would be made to work on frontend, you'ld still have to save the article before being able to create the menu item. So it would not work the way you want by being able to choose the menu before saving.

I think Joomla 1.6+ does have some possibilities to make that happen...

So you mean even in the new Joomla this is not out-of-the-box? How comes, that such a feature is left behind. Even WP seems to be more suitable then to work with for clients that want to take care for their site by themselves after it is designed.

I just dont understand that i am apparantly the only one out here who is missing this feature, i mean, are not many many others having the same issue, clients that should be able to take care without much technical fuss about their site (so without backend need).

Do you also have clients that want to take care for their own site without needing you? How do you equip their joomla to fit all their needs? Maybe i just miss something out...

i work with joomla for two years now, its fine and i make own templates. just now i had my first client for whom i need to make it work for him without my future interference and stumbled upon this frontend gap. but i dont understand what a template has to do with it? sounds like the answer to another post about templates, can you describe a bit more how the template is influencing the possibility to add menuitem in frontend and if your answer suggests that there is a solution?

otherwise, i guess that it is really best for such clients to make their site simply in WP...

Joomla is not aimed to be fully maintained by people who don't know there way around the web. It is mainly aimed at websites that can be managed by a webmaster. At least, that's my view.

Peter how much would you charge to make this work from frontend for 1.7?

Perhaps we can make a group donation for this?
At a certain point you make it once we have enough.

Well, for now I have too much on my plate as it is. So I won't be able to try and implement this any time soon (as in coming months).

I fully agree with Sofian. This feature is a real loss for Joomla. Me and my customers would greatly benefit from this addition, as I do not have to maintain their menu's and they can quickly add new pages without waiting for me to make it accessible. I hope you find the time to improve this Joomla area and I am willing to pay for this extension as well.
